For those of you who were around last year, you may remember this blog post I did about summer-into-fall fashion.
I enjoyed putting together the outfits for that post so much that I wanted to do it again this year!
Now that we’re at the end of August, my brain is in full-on fall mode.
I’m so excited for cozy sweaters, crunchy leaves, and all things spooky, but the New Jersey weather isn’t as eager to make the transition as I am.
In years past, and likely this year, the 80-degree days and hot sun stick around well into September, and sometimes even throughout October.
There is no way I’m waiting that long to wear my favorite old and new pieces, so I’ve added some items into my wardrobe that can be styled for both seasons.
Here are my favorite transition pieces that work perfectly for the summer and fall, and some examples of how you can wear them for both. Everything is shoppable at the bottom of the post!
Knotted Leopard Tee
What a shocker, the first item on my list is leopard print! Okay, so if you know me (and my leopard obsession) that really isn’t a surprise, but what is surprising is how many ways you can actually wear this simple knotted tee. It goes with everything!
Wear it with some shorts and sandals for a cute summer look that will keep you cool, or pair it with some full-length bottoms and booties for crisper days. I like adding black shoes and accessories with this top, but the leopard spots are a bit faded, so you can definitely introduce other colors without it clashing.
Faux Leather Leggings
These leggings scream fall, in my opinion, but they’re so amazing that it doesn’t feel right confining them to a single season. These are a true closet staple for me–flattering, comfortable, and versatile.
Wear these leggings with a long tank and some flip flops for a chic and breezy look, or throw on a big sweater and booties to completely change the look. Another great thing about these leggings is that they’re cute enough to be the “pop” in your outfit, but neutral enough to hang back if you have another statement piece in your outfit.
Leopard Midi Skirt
This skirt is a recent purchase for me and I’m super happy with it! It’s very soft and silky and thin enough to wear even when it’s hot out.
Add a crop top and some heels and you have the perfect summer date night outfit, or add a longer top and closed-toe shoes for lower temperatures. This skirt could also go really well with a chunky sweater on top!
This bodysuit is another recent purchase that I instantly fell in love with. I love the snaps in the front and use them to adjust how revealing (or not) I want the top to be. It’s also super comfortable and a great basic that goes with anything.
For example, it goes great with a part of shorts, some cute sandals, and summery accessories, but it also looks just as good with jeans, loafers, and a wide-brimmed hat.
Color Block Sweater
So, this is the first year I’ve actually tried wearing sweaters in the summer, and I don’t know why I never did it before! I’m one of those people who is perpetually cold, so I can definitely stand a little extra warmth and comfort even when it’s hot out.
I’ve already gushed over this sweater on my Instagram stories, but for anyone who missed those, just know that this is made with great quality material, looks and feels expensive, and is adorable. I also have a discount code for this sweater and anything else on Indigo Closet, if you want some extra savings: LAURAC15.
Anyway, as you can see this sweater goes great with jeans and booties, but it also works well with shorts and sandals. It’s the perfect length to tuck in (what I’d do with shorts) or wear loose (what I’d do with leggings…I’d wear it both tucked and un-tucked with jeans).
Pearl Denim Jacket
In my opinion, this jacket works best for the spring, but you can definitely get away with wearing it in the summer or fall, too! The pearls are the perfect extra little detail that adds flair to any outfit, and the jacket itself fits and feels great.
For a fun summer look, wear it over a tee and some shorts and add bright sunglasses and sandals. For a more fall-friendly outfit, swap out the shorts for jeans and change around the accessories accordingly. The best part about this jacket is that you can throw it on over any outfit of your choice!
Long Sleeve Leopard Top
This top is from Amazon, so not only is it cute but it’s also a great price. It’s a lightweight top which makes it cool enough to wear alone in the summer, but it’s also great for layering in the fall. Just imagine a cute leather jacket with the leopard pattern popping out in the front…love!
I’ve styled it here with some black cutoff shorts and espadrilles for the summer. To make the transition over to fall, swap out the shoes for neutral sneakers, add a purse, sunglasses, and of course some longer pants.
Floral Off-the-Shoulder Top
This was actually the first item I picked out for this blog post! I’m not usually a floral gal, but I love the pattern of this top and the fit is great, too. It’s a little on the shorter side so I like to wear it with high-waisted bottoms, but if you don’t mind showing a little midriff then mid-rise will work fine, too.
The summer look includes shorts, my go-to Tory Burch sandals and purse, and sum oversized sunglasses. For the fall version, I’ve added jeans, closed-toe flat shoes, a belt, and wide-brimmed hat. Most the time when creating transition outfits, the accessories can really help pull you towards one season or another.
Those are all of my summer-to-fall transition picks for 2020!
I hope you enjoyed reading this post as much as I enjoyed putting it together, and I hope you’re feeling inspired to get some extra wear out of your clothes this year.
